Openers, Icebreakers, and Energizers

Page history last edited by Star Fisher 13 years, 5 months ago

Here is a page for people to post their favorite openers, icebreakers, energizers and closers (forgot to put that in the page title). Post away!

I think we're all listed as "writers" on this wiki, which means you can click on the "edit" button to add your posts. When you finish, just click on the "save" button and the page returns to "view."

Icebreakers

Here are two from past cohorts:

When I was a teacher, I would pair students up and have them interview each other. I'd provide them with sample questions (majors, career goals, high school attended, favorite books/movies/music, etc.) They would then introduce their partner to the class. I liked using this because everyone got to know a little about each other, starting from the first day (and some folks even became friends with that original partner).

The other fun icebreaker I've used is the "two truths and a lie" one. You write down three things about yourself, two of which are true, and one which is a lie. Here's one I used about myself.

1. When I was in my 20s, I hitchhiked with a girlfriend to Alaska. (It was the 70s - people did that sort of thing back then).

2. I was homecoming queen my senior year in high school.

3. One of my ancestors was the assistant principal chief of the Cherokee Indians at the time of the Trail of Tears.

I really enjoyed the sharing at the CPLP study group meeting last Saturday. There were some very good uses of Ice Breakers, Openers, Energizers and Closers. I have a closer that I would like to share; I purchased the yellow pointing finger foam hand through Trainer's Warehouse and I hand them out to the class to write some key things they want to remember on. At the end of class we review these key things and add something each will use on their job immediately upon return to the job. They can look at the hand to remind them of these things at any time.

What a great idea!
My favorite opener: Have learners write their names vertically on a piece of paper. Give them 5 minutes to write an adjective or sentence that starts with each letter of their name. I always tell them to avoid work qualities and focus on personal qualities to get to know them. Example R=read, E=enthusiastic, N=near sighted, E=experiemental, E=energetic. I lead by telling why chose each word and use that to get to know them.

I use quotes. Things like "you don't stop laughing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop laughing", "do the right things everyday", "never miss a good chance to shut up", "when the student is ready, the master appears", "It is better to know nothing than to have learned nothing". etc. Learners chose one, and introductions include why they chose it. It gives great insight into the person... For example - I've found that 2 kinds of people chose "shut up" 1 - their mouth gets them in trouble or 2- they learn more from listening.
